How Feedback Supports Learning at Croxley Danes School
At Croxley Danes School, we believe that effective feedback is key to helping students make progress, deepen their understanding, and become independent, reflective learners. Our approach to feedback is designed to be clear, purposeful, and timely - so students know what they’re doing well and how they can improve.
We use three main types of feedback across the school year:
1. Ongoing (continuous) Feedback
Students receive frequent feedback during lessons to help them improve straight away. This may include:
Verbal feedback from the teacher as they move around the classroom
Peer and self-assessment, where students check their own or a partner’s work using success criteria, model answers, or mark schemes provided by the teacher
Instant feedback on homework quizzes completed online in some subjects
We encourage students to respond to feedback immediately by making corrections or improvements in green pen, so both they and their teacher can clearly see their progress.
2. Check-In Assessments (once every half term)
Each subject will include a low-stakes check-in task roughly once every half term. These tasks may be quizzes or short written responses and are designed to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
These tasks are not graded or sent home, but teachers carefully review them. Teachers then provide whole-class feedback or work with small groups to re-teach key areas if needed.Students may also receive coded feedback in their books, pointing them toward how they can improve. In subjects where students work on practical or creative projects, they will receive targeted feedback before their final deadline, giving them time to refine their work.
3. Formal Assessment Points (APs) and Mock Exams (for Years 10–13)
All year groups take part in formal assessment points at set times throughout the year. These are fully marked by teachers and returned with key areas for improvement clearly highlighted. Students use this feedback during Reflection and Improvement Time (RIT) in class, again using green pen to show their corrections and learning. Marks from these assessments contribute to the school’s tracking data, which is shared with parents twice a year. For students in Key Stages 4 and 5, mock exams are also part of the feedback cycle and help prepare them for their final GCSE or A-Level exams.
Communication of Assessment Dates
To ensure students are well prepared:
All formal assessments (APs and mock exams) are shared with students on Google Classroom at least two weeks in advance. Students will be told exactly what topics or units are being assessed so they can revise effectively. For KS4 and KS5 mock exams, a full exam schedule is sent to students and parents three weeks before the exam period begins.
