Subject Leaders (SL) are responsible for the strategic leadership and direction of specific subject areas. Their key responsibilities include curriculum mapping, organising and regularly reviewing schemes of learning, monitoring and evaluating the quality of teaching and learning within their subject, supporting non-specialist teachers, managing resources efficiently, and ensuring the curriculum meets the needs of all learners. Each SL is line-managed by either a Head of Faculty or a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
In terms of implementation, SLs are supported in developing subject knowledge and long-term learning strategies aligned with the seven pillars outlined in the ‘PREPARE’ teaching principles.
Curriculum monitoring and evaluation occur throughout the academic year using a range of self-evaluation tools, including lesson observations, curriculum reviews, internal and external progress data, and book looks. To support SLs in tracking the development of their curriculum areas, three Quality Assurance (QA) cycles are conducted annually. These reviews provide faculties with structured opportunities to reflect on, assess, and evaluate the progression of their subject curricula.
Specific members of the SLT hold responsibility for the oversight of whole-school curriculum intent, implementation, and impact.
Regarding curriculum intent, their responsibilities include reviewing the overall curriculum offer, timetabling, learner placement, delivery of CEIAG (Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance), course viability, and recommending new curriculum options where appropriate.
With respect to curriculum impact, the focus is on learners' knowledge and understanding of the curriculum, performance in national assessments, and successful progression to further education, training, or employment.
