The KS4 core curriculum comprises: English, Maths, Science, and PE . In addition, learners have four option choices. Towards the end of Year 9, learners begin the process of selecting their GCSE options. To support an appropriate and personalised curriculum, each learner is allocated to a specific pathway (Pathway 1, 2, or 3). This allocation is informed by a range of academic indicators, including CAT scores and Scale scores.
Pathway 1 learners will follow the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) route, which includes a core academic curriculum, Geography and/or History, French or Spanish and two option subjects.
Pathway 2 learners are offered a broader selection, with the opportunity to choose four option subjects in addition to the core curriculum.
Pathway 3 learners are supported through a more tailored programme, which includes the opportunity to complete the King’s Trust Award, alongside three option subjects.
This tiered approach ensures that the curriculum is responsive to the needs, abilities, and aspirations of all learners.
The curriculum is currently organised as follows:
The curriculum, including options courses, are reviewed in the Autumn Term every year to ensure that the courses offered continue to meet the needs of each particular year group and their successful progression to the next stage of their education.
The options system is currently organised on a free choice basis, after learners have been given guidance on their pathways, with blocks constructed to enable the maximum number of learners to be placed on their preferred courses.
Selection by prior attainment forms no part of the options placement process at KS4. However, guidance around which pathway is most suitable for learners (including, for example, the decision about whether to study Combined or Triple Science) is made in consultation with staff based on the learner's achievement in that subject area.
Additionally, we offer a bespoke course for selected learners through the Kings' Trust, providing an opportunity to study beyond the standard curriculum. Through this programme, learners develop a range of valuable skills including leadership, critical thinking, independent research, teamwork, and effective communication.
We offer 17 GCSE and 1 vocational course. The specific qualifications on offer are available on the school website.
